The shops sell these all year now, which takes way their specialness and now they are making them with bizarre flavourings...just NO. But I do try to make them every Easter holiday as they are so much nicer homemade with good ingredients. And who does not like a toasted spiced bun with butter?
It's that way with so many things, even so that we have forgotten that many things are connected to a date or time of year. As you say it does take away from them being extra special as you no longer need to look forward to them, they are always there.
We used to sing the hot cross buns jingle when I was growing up in a largely Jewish neighborhood in Chicago, despite never having seen an actual hot cross bun nor being aware of the connection to Easter. I wonder how this particular bit of the “lore and language of school children” was transmitted to us!
