The shops sell these all year now, which takes way their specialness and now they are making them with bizarre flavourings...just NO. But I do try to make them every Easter holiday as they are so much nicer homemade with good ingredients. And who does not like a toasted spiced bun with butter?

We used to sing the hot cross buns jingle when I was growing up in a largely Jewish neighborhood in Chicago, despite never having seen an actual hot cross bun nor being aware of the connection to Easter. I wonder how this particular bit of the “lore and language of school children” was transmitted to us!
